The Glass Menagerie
Video & Projection Design for Live Cinema Theatre
The Glass Menagerie, perhaps the most famous of all memory plays, captures the fragile ache of longing, illusion, and family ties strained to their breaking point. Filtered through Tom’s introspective narration and lifelong preoccupation with the movies, the story unfolds as a live cinema reconstruction of eight faded memories underscored by a live musical soundscape.

"...the most effective dramatic use of video technology I’ve ever seen in a theatrical production...What is truly remarkable is the precision of the framing in each use of the camera and in the projections designed by Adam J. Thompson...an exquisitely designed and executed production...a stunning piece of theater." - The Stages of MN
”The artistic decision that sets this version of [the] play apart is a design that incorporates video cameras into the action and casts large-scale projections of the actors in close up across the wall behind them…It makes for a far more intimate experience. And that proves valuable in a play about vulnerability, establishing connections, and severing them.” - Twin Cities Pioneer Press
”…perhaps the best realization of Williams' quintessential memory play that I've seen. It's dreamy, and cinematic, and intimate, and nostalgic, and heartachingly beautiful. The innovative and risk-taking concept is gorgeously executed by the entire team.” - Cherry and Spoon
”…thoughtful, visually arresting and emotionally precise, with creative choices that make a familiar classic feel newly alive…Visually, the production is unlike anything else…Video and projections designer Adam J. Thompson adds a cinematic layer that supports the drifting, impressionistic structure of memory — and the use of the home video camera is genuinely effective. It deepens the idea that we’re watching Tom replay something he can’t stop rewinding…[The production] lingers in the music, the visuals and the quiet ache of characters who want more than the world has given them.” - Eden Prairie News
”…[the] most daring, and ultimately most rewarding, choice is the reimagining of Tom’s creative process. Replacing the traditional onstage writing desk with a live video camera, the production grants the audience a literal lens into our narrator’s mind. We see what Tom sees; we focus where he lingers. It transforms the play from a stagnant memory into a dynamic, cinematic act…The design elements here are nothing short of sublime…Together, the scenic, sound, and projections create a cinematic slant on this American classic that feels vital and new.” - Minnesota Monthly
”The play opens with Tom standing in front of a camera, cigarette in hand, eyes gazing off in the distance, then speaking directly into the camera to tell us, ‘I am both a character in this play and its reflective narrator.’ The projections are fascinating…and a brilliant choice. I felt completely connected to this story from start to finish. It engages all the senses.” - Play Off the Page
“It works brilliantly, with Adam J. Thompson credited for design of the extraordinary video and projections…This is a thoughtful and beautifully conceived production.” - Talkin’ Broadway
”…very brilliant visuals…this is a production that feels like a speeding bullet that comes to a startling halt at the perfect time…a wonderfully crafted piece [that] deserves the lauding it has been receiving.” - BroadwayWorld
